Whether you have a laundry room as a separate room in your house, or plan to have a laundry room in a residential house, this room always needs a special floor. It could be compared with the one in the bathroom, because here, too, you have to expect moisture and humidity, but it is a utility room rather than a place for recreation. It follows that the functionality is more important than the design.
What should be the floor?
First of all, the classic question should be asked, what properties should have the floor in the laundry room, what you expect from him. The answer is quite clear. The important thing is the resistance to water and moisture. If you also use the room as a drying room, water from wet laundry can be expected to drip onto the floor. Some floors could be harmed by this. Water on the floor, could also bother you. Slipping with a full laundry basket is definitely not pleasant, so a non-slip floor would be good.
Another important aspect that most consider is the price. After all, it's just a utility room that you don't normally bring visitors into, so it doesn't have to be anything special. So the luxury option is really unnecessary in the laundry room. Therefore, focus on the practical.What is definitely unsuitable?
The worst option is probably a carpet. It would always be wet and it could also be harmed by the chemicals used to remove the stain. It's enough if just a little gets on the floor and there's a permanent stain.
Unsuitable flooring for a laundry room is certainly laminate. It is common knowledge that laminate flooring lifts when exposed to water. One drop doesn't matter, of course, but if the water stays on the floor for several hours, the floor will become soaked and will have to be replaced altogether.Wood also does not like water and chemicals. Excessive moisture causes bulging, open joints and mold. On top of that, it's pretty expensive fun. For rooms where water is expected, it is completely unsuitable.
What else should be thought about?
An acceptable option are classic ceramic tiles. They do not mind water, after all, they are normally used in bathrooms. The wide range of products is also pleasing. However, a disadvantage is the price offer, namely you need to add the price of laying, which for one square meter is very often higher than the tiles as such.
Another solution that will save you money is vinyl flooring. The choice of different patterns is practically as wide as for tiles, and on top of that you can choose whether you prefer classic, durable tiles or large vinyl planks. Look at the offer very carefully, because even between PVC tiles there are differences.Because of the moisture,which must be reckoned with, a non-slip floor is favorable, which also does not mind water and chemicals. Terramondi tile has an anti-slip pattern, is resistant to chemicals and has a drainage channel system on the underside, which ensures the drainage of moisture. This prevents the formation of mold. If water gets under the tile, it is easy to remove the tile, dry the floor and put the tile back in.
Do you really want to pay craftsmen as well?
For laying tiles Terramondi need only a rubber mallet and a knife. Laying manages an average skilled person without professional help, in an hour everything is ready. In most cases, you can do without the need to make a levelling layer. Since there is also no need to calculate a price for the work, tiling a 20 m2 room will cost you about 760 euros.
Some floor coverings are cheaper per m2, but after adding the labor and the amount for subfloor preparation, we get very similar amounts. As an example, let's take again a 20 m2 room and lay linoleum there now. For leveling with self-leveling compound you pay 5 - 12 euros per m2 (so about 170 EUR). As a price for the actual linoleum we calculate 12 EUR per m2 (total 240 EUR), but in case of heavier use it is easily 23 EUR/m2. Further we have to add the labor - about 21 EUR per m2, because gluing and welding is simply expensive. In total, this brings us to an amount of 800 EUR.
Another option is classic vinyl flooring with click system, where the planks are either just laid or glued. Here, too, it is necessary to level the subfloor (6 EUR/m2) and work of the floor layer (8 EUR/m2). The price of an ordinary vinyl floor for apartments is about 16 EUR/m2 (again, we do not calculate anything expensive). After adding up, we get 600 EUR.
So, Terramondi PVC tiles are not much more expensive than other alternatives and everyone can decide whether to pay extra for something more quality and innovative solution. There are many reasons to do so. In addition to those already mentioned, we can mention resistance to wear, impact and easy local repair. The tile can be easily removed and replaced. In addition, you can be sure that you buy the tiles for long decades. The warranty is 12 years, but the tiles will last much longer. You may end up moving them to a completely different room rather than the laundry room. The application is diverse.
